The electricity went out this morning, a wet sleety Saturday in October in Michigan and it was cold.
I put on my earphones and started to listen to Andrea Bocelli and picked up a book.
That book was “The Accidental Creative” by Todd Henry and as is my way I immediately started to doodle thoughts in the margins.
It is true that I philosophize about life and perhaps reflect too much, for some people anyway.
Too many questions Peter they might say, just relax and live the moment. Never mind about tomorrow, enjoy today.
All that is true, however at least once a week I go on to utube and listen to the commencement speech of Steve Jobs:
That speech was back in 2005 and it is worth reminding us, that life has to have a value.
I agree with Jobs, people can only make the connections looking back! After all is that not what wisdom is and imparting your experience to our young ones?
Reading for me is an aphrodisiac something that refreshes my mind and re-ignites my energy.
Thanks to this book I was reminded of some connections we can all relate to.
The challenge for all of us is: What are you prepared to do? When all is said and done how much will you have left in the “tank”?
Stop trying + Stop doing = Mediocrity
Be the same + Do the same: + don’t question = Go with the Flow
Courage + Questioning + Challenge = Ride against the Flow
Structure + Intentional purpose = Effectiveness
Purpose + Intent + Persistence = Generational ideas
A purposeful life is when you blend all that you do:
Work + Family + Relationships + Friends + Interests into who you are?
Someone who takes the next blank page and turns it into a picture and knowing that it is not what you know that matters but rather what you do.
Brilliant ideas are in everyone Thanks Todd

Don’t get me wrong I am all for change! Perhaps too much so on occasion!
BUT let’s be clever about it.
Some folks spend much of their time wanting the organization to fit their desires and needs. That simply will not work!
That’s not change that’s simply looking through the wrong lens.
There have been very few organizations that decide their very essence; their culture needs an overhaul.
So for those of you who spend your time fighting the “system”. I say to you. You screwed up!!! Get out because you add no value!
It was at the interview. That is when you should have figured out whether you want to work there, don’t use your energy and more important those around you to figure out that everybody else is wrong!
Understand the difference between stretching the organizational box, which is a good thing, and wanting to play outside the box and stay there. That simply means, “get out when you can, or you will get fired!” And it will be the right thing for everybody.
YOU DON”T FIT!
Business needs people who know the difference between change that creates a better environment for the success of everyone in the business and change for personal reasons.
“What’s the problem?” (The culture/psychology enquirer in me!)
“Well you want the good news and the bad news story about my truck?”
Sure I said (getting ready for something compelling!)
“The good news is that the battery I bought has fixed the non-starting problems.
The bad news is that the negative battery cable is busted! And the day was going so well.”
“So what has that got to do with your thoughts of HR and what is more important? “
(Waiting for something profound like career versus an old truck????)
Since my truck does more for me than HR…This!!
“Do you know he said that my new theme song for work is – “Hotel California”… You can check out but you can never leave!”
“As usual my place of employment has made it a banner week for me…. Career wise this is my worst week ever.”
Why is that I asked. (stupidly)
“I just applied for a new job at work. All I have to do is get through the first hurdle which is Catbert… (He. from Evil HR Director fame…) http://search.dilbert.com/comic/Evil Catbert
Well how many more degrees do I need??? I asked HR – HR said let me look at the job spec!!
“My boss thinks I am ideal…but what does he know? I need to go through some “HR assessment.”
So I asked.
“You don’t have a warm feeling about HR? “(Was that a too obvious question?)
“I’m not drinking cause of the dentist I’m drinking cause I dislike many things about today.”
“I mean lets face it! Today work gave me a perfect attendance award because I didn’t use any personal or sick time last year… Used all my vacation though…
The award consisted of a certificate that a third grader would think is cheap and a water bottle that is so poorly designed that I’m actually ashamed to have it… I guess they want me to keep drinking the Kool-aid.”
