Simply the Greeter.

homedepot

I recently started my new career as a greeter at the local Home Depot in the town I live.

It’s the first time in my whole working life, some 40 years, that I have “punched in”.

It has taken me some time to get used to the driver of my time. “the clock”.

All my career life, I just went to work, started and finished when I did!

Agreed I spent way too much time at work, at the cost of family time, and what I got paid did not equate to my hours. I often think I got below minimum wage!!!

It is so strange to be ruled not by the job I do but simply because my job is “hourly” and I get paid overtime and for “every hour” I work.

Not every jobs’ value can be measured in the “labels they are given”.

I have always been aware that some of the most important of jobs have been way down the management chain. The hard-working employees at the “coal face” that is engine of all successful companies.

It is also the most rewarding of jobs I have ever had. I am a greeter and proud to be so!!!!

I have been fortunate of having many well-paid jobs, always associated with major responsibilities. With titles comes labels and with labels comes “stuff”.

Off course I worked for those jobs through qualifications, experience and promotions. I did my time and worked my way up.

That’s not the point though!

More recently following my retirement from the corporate world, I was discussing my new “career” with Doreen my wife, my new role as a greeter at Home Depot.

She asked me how it felt to be “a greeter” she asked as she said I looked the happiest I had been in years, and yet the job had nowhere near the “senior level of decision making” I had now left behind.

I agreed, but said it has the most important of roles

“To make every customer experience as enjoyable as is imaginable and to be the best coworker and thus the best greeter ever!!!

I said finally I get to do what I want to do, without the pressures associated in those “high level jobs”.

Gone is the politics associated with what my bosses wanted me to do, whether I agreed or not.

Gone was the pressures of a senior role and having little actual impact in the real decision making, and at last I could now follow my lifelong passion of serving people.

Now here is the strange thing.

My career has been in Human Resources! People!!!!

My job as an HR executive, whether in the Automotive space or in Healthcare was just another name for being a “greeter”.

The corporate greeter of people, from recruitment through retirement, and everything in between.

So, when people say well, now how do you feel being simply a greeter I say, “I love it!” I have been preparing for this job all my career.

They look at me quickly until I explain.

The role of greeter is one of the most important roles there is!

And here is what I say:

  1. It is often the first contact a customer will have with the organization.
  2. It facilities a potential poor customer experience to one that they could never have been expected.
  3. The impression of the greeter sets the tone of the whole customer experience.
  4. It is the face and the first cultural example of the organization.
  5. It facilitates a likelihood of a customer wanting to come back to not only purchase products but meet people who have created a shopping community.
  6. The role of the greeter is also the “glue” between every department and the customer.
  7. The greeter has the significant role of working between departments ensuring there is seamless customer hand over and importantly product knowledge.
  8. The face of an enthusiastic greeter is contagious to their coworkers and the public.
  9. The role of the greeter is to engender a team spirit which raises the spirit of everyone.
  10. The role of the greeter is to ask, “what else can I do for you?”

It’s probably, I know it is, the most important career move I have ever made. Its not about my university qualifications, my degrees or my titles.

Its not about the fancy job titles or the cars or offices I have had.

The role of a greeter sets the experience level for every customer who comes to the organization and the desire for every coworker to want to work with them.

In the corporate role they may call this customer satisfaction and employee engagement.

To me it’s simply the role of the greeter, my new career and I love it!!

Thank you, Home Depot, for giving me the opportunity in my new career!

Thanks to all my coworkers who invited me into the “Live Orange” culture.

Peter, Simply the greeter and proud of it

Life’s Curtain call.

Live today like no other.

Give to others like no other,

For then we can teach each other,

To live a life like no other.

The curtain goes up, now it comes down.

Swishes one way and now swishes the other…. way.

We step out, we bow, we smile, we step right back and the curtain falls.

Our smile disappears.

It opens, it discloses, and now it closes,
We see as spectator’s glimpse of the performers it hides.
Now you see me, now you don’t,
Now I smile now I won’t.

Will you ever know me, do you care to know me?
What you see is me, and then not me,

Life’s mask has adorned me.

Will you ever know me, do you care to care?
The performer that’s outside me is not the me that’s within.

What you see, is not what is me, the me that is hidden is often forbidden,

To you.

Will you ever know me, do you care to care?
Now the curtain reveals its show to you,

The performer within me will smile and beguile.
The people I meet they care or they don’t,
They hurt me as oft as oft as they want.
Some look after my back or they don’t and don’t care,
There are some real friends although often they are not.

The friends that are friends are so rare to find,

So, nurture their friendship and ensure you are kind.
People talk straight but many they don’t,
Seems easier to talk badly cause that’s what they want.

The demons within them much stronger than good,

The “fork tongues” within them feed better on bad food.

When they eat the bad seed do they care about you,

Or simply deliver the message that discredits,

seems much easier to do.

The sun goes up the sun goes down,

The sun disappears.

The warmth that there was now grows cold and so dark.
The friends we make, the friends who remain,

The friends who we can share the sadness and tears.
Which do we have?

The sunshine friends or the flitting moonlighters,

The ones that stay through thick and thin.

The ones that believe and stay by your side,

or simply discard you like an old broken dustbin.

We are grateful for the friends who remain in our lifetime,

for they create the memories,

we share always and for all times in our life.

The friends we had now some long gone,

though some remain.

The friends they live the friends they die.
Some we remember some forgotten,

in life’s wind swept away in the dusts of time.

The kids we were, they are all long gone,

all grown up into the adults we now are.

The adults we are, the mask we now wear,

we now hope is kindly,

not ravished by those who didn’t care.

Or tainted by the world that is tough and blunts our hearts.
Let’s hope we still believe in happy endings,

That there is a bright sparkle and a light when it’s all over.

The life we now have is the life we now lead.
The life we lead determined by our heart and our courage.

The courage we have dependent on the desire to change.
The desire to change and overcome the challenges we dare to take…

For life so surely throws them all, we cannot dodge.

The courage that unharnesses the comfort zone, so there is none.
For when it’s gone much more is possible,
Let us be unbridled, free of any zone.
For our comfort zone determines our horizons, determines our scope.
The horizons, near or far the distance determined by the fear and the chains within.
For without such constraints all life is changed.
So, let us be free of the box,

For what then we ask ourselves, if there was no box to think outside?

What then would we think?
Would not all thoughts and ideas be free to collide with unrestrained liberty and creative energy.

Life with no zone and no box has the limitless energy of all that is possible.

The possibility that much more can be achieved.

A life fulfilled with much more,
A life that delivers our dreams, a life fulfilled.

The curtain opens, it opens wide, it opens fully,

Let us walk through heads held high and

step right through and grab the blessings of life.

So that when we take our last curtain call,

we have given the very best performance,

with all the gifts we were given.

Let’s still believe in happy endings,

That there is a bright rainbow when it’s all over.

Live today like no other.

Give to others like no other,

For then we can teach each other,

To live a life like no other.

Truth or Secret!

As a blogger I am fortunate to have a number of folks’ who talk to me about what I write. This is one of their stories.

This blog may well reach out to many of us who have had those moments when we had to decide Truth or Secret. This may be YOUR STORY TOO…

  • Which can you cope with?
  • What do you REALLY want to KNOW?
  • If we knew could we ever FORGET?
  • If we knew could we ever FORGIVE?
  • Would it make us STRONGER?
  • Would it make us WEAKER?
  • Would it destroy who we ARE?
  • Would it define our CHARCTER for BETTER or WORSE?

Life has given all of us this CROSS ROAD and yet many of us HIDE truth and SECRET away for it is easier not to DEAL with REALITY.

Sometimes, we believe that not knowing is better than dealing with the the REALITY of TRUTH.

And yet…… those who don’t want to know will always remember… LINGERING DOUBTS LAST A LIFE TIME….

Do we REALLY believe that not KNOWING is the coping mechanism of LIFE?

Sometimes TRUTH is to damn HARD to cope with and too HURTFUL that we may never RETURN to who we ARE.

Sometimes the SECRET we keep is all the TRUTH we need and KNOW that the TWISTS and BENDS of life MAKES us WHO WE ARE!

The TRUTH is we all HAVE SECRETS the question is has HOW DID IT MAKE US BETTER PEOPLE…. Did it BUILD us or DIMINISH us?

Dedicated to all those who went through that dark tunnel! Thanks for sharing the journey.

Outside the spotlight- Do you REALLY know me?

spotlight

Who am I?

Like all spotlights when they shine on us they shine on just one part of us.

Often there is more. In fact, always there is more.

Yet many of us make decisions about each other on the smallest of information.

We make quick judgements, based on the little we know, and not of what we care to know, or that there is much more to know.

We think we know the person based on a brief interaction and often what others tell us, often our friends.

Is it because of our  own spotlight that we do not see the best of others, or indeed the ALL of others

Is a song or an artist bad because of what we think of them or are they really quite brilliant. WE simply don’t SEE or CARE or WANT to see the talent beneath?

How often do we look beyond the briefest of glimpses?

Those glimpses that determine who people believe us to be or indeed of what we think of others.

Whose light is it anyway that shines on us.  Is it mine or yours?

It’s true there is more to life than simply what is before us.

For those who care to understand they know that often what lies outside that spotlight is often the best of us and they have not seen the all of us.

Soar on the breeze, blown by the Wind.

Soar on the breeze, blown by the Wind

You may have my heart but not my soul

Life brings what it does….  No matter.

I am in charge of myself let it be known

My mind is my compass; my heart my compassion

My soul defines my character, and who I am.

My journey to my destiny be clear comes with choices

To be led by the crowd or hold strong through my faith.

And know what defines me are the choices I make

They will carry me through life’s challenges, whether they be good or with strife

What I achieve in my life is the reason for my being.

For they say life is a dash

And others will respond and attempt to influence; of that there is little doubt;

To have their say but be certain it does not have to be their way.

Create your own “carpe diem” and soar on the breeze and live your life.

Always remember stand out from the crowd

And be remembered because of who you truly are as that

Is the best of your life.

To always be remembered as the best version of who you are:

is to live through doing no harm to others.

Each day awakening with good in your heart;

a smile on your face and kindness in your deeds.

As such be remembered.
