When a privilege becomes an entitlement!

It seems the more people want to vary their work schedule, and the more the business complies the more people want!

I was speaking to some friends of mine who own their own businesses, in retail. They tell me “stories” about their staff always wanting time off at the busiest of times, holidays!

They tell me they usually have to concede something, like an early finish time or half a day.

Then everything goes haywire when one staff member has “earned” time off. The others feel they should get the same just because..it’s not fair!

Ok give it a rest folks. We all go to work and there is something called a work schedule.

Don’t spend all your time trying to figure out how much time “You are not going to work”.

It makes it easy for the business.

I say to them go find those who want to work!

When you get time off to go to the dentist, the doctor , daycare etc etc it’s a privilege, especially when every time it happens to eat into your work schedule!

Don’t ever be a doctor or a nurse! That’ s all I say.

Great employers will always be flexible..but don’t risk a privilege becoming an entitlement.

  1. HMM ,things are getting very difficult these day’s .
i had a young girl call the surgery on a Friday morning with very bad toothache, her employer would not allow her time off to come .( the girl worked in a child care nursery ) due to rules stating that there had to be so many staff there to the ratio of children , so the girl had to suffer all weekend . , her employer was acting on the rules that are set by government health and safety etc , if she had come out her work and there had been a child hurt then all hell would have broke loose, yet the girl had to suffer pain for 3 days .

so what is the answer .

    • Employers need to understand their responsibility to provide an environment where Employees want to give of their best. There are clearly employers out there who are an abomination to their own mission.

  2. This is a great post, I totally can relate to employees like this and my husband is a doctor. Thank you for putting this out there in a clear and simple way.
