What is the real value of Business or Professional Conferences?

I recently had some interesting comments from friends of mine about the value or lack thereof of attending expensive conferences in high glamour locations and hotels!

Maybe that is what the attraction is!!! It is rare it seems that they get much of significance from the conference!

My thoughts were consolidated in reading blogs and tweets and elsewhere regarding content. E.g.

  1. Same old same old- nothing new.
  2. No real break through thinking.
  3. Same style and structure of conference.
  4. I get to meet cool people.
  5. Nice or awful place for a conference.
  6. Great or poor food.
  7. Touting the profession.
  8. Little inspiration etc

So what are your experiences?

Is your professions’ conference cutting edge?

Are you taking away key business ideas that really add to your business competitiveness or your competence?

Is the real value simply in the people you meet?

Are we hearing from the truly radical though thinkers?

Where do you really find cutting edge thinking ideas?

I would like to hear your comments lets figure out what really works and give our business real value.
